I've seen Coen brothers' version of True Grit twice, but on this third viewing, at the very beginning of the film, I see Hailee Steinfeld with new eyes. Her look is classic American, her family name is Jewish. But today I see something African in her face. I stop the movie and dig into Wikipedia. This is how I learn her maternal grandfather was half African American.
The bottom line is that I am much different today than I was at the time of the previous viewings. And thank God for that. "If at 50 you see things the way you saw them at 20, you've wasted 30 years of your life," Muhammad Ali used to say.
